In the late afternoon of Monday, February 26, 2024, 40-year-old Tamekia Tana Fluker was inside her home on South Main Avenue in Sylacauga, Alabama, when her life was tragically cut short. Around 4:00 p.m., multiple gunshots were fired from the street into her residence. Struck by at least one of the bullets, Fluker was pronounced dead at the scene by responding officers. Investigators with the Sylacauga Police Department quickly determined that they did not believe Fluker was the intended target of the shooting.
The investigation into the senseless killing led authorities to identify a suspect. The Sylacauga Police Department secured two-count capital murder warrants for 16-year-old Jamir De'Jawn Russ, also known as 'JD,' in connection with Fluker's death. The charges against him include shooting from a vehicle and shooting into an occupied residence. Authorities have asked for the public's assistance in locating Russ.
Tragically, this was not the first time the Fluker family had been devastated by violence at this very same home. On July 1, 2022, Tamekia's 22-year-old brother, Nartavius Cortez Fluker-Smith, was shot and killed while sitting in his car in front of the residence. An arrest was made in that case, with Sheridan Rashon Clark being charged with capital murder and awaiting trial in the Talladega County Jail. Tamekia, who was born on May 12, 1983, was a mother to four children and was remembered for her sweet, giving spirit and a heart of gold.
