On a summer afternoon in Washington, D.C., violence shattered the day, leaving two cousins dead and a community reeling. James Johnson, a 53-year-old man, was fatally shot on Wednesday, August 24, 2022, in the unit block of O Street NW. The attack also claimed the life of his 43-year-old cousin, Rashad Johnson. The shooting unfolded at approximately 12:48 p.m. when at least two assailants emerged from a black SUV and opened fire on a group of people, striking five men in total.
The brazen daylight shooting left both James and Rashad Johnson with fatal injuries at the scene. Three other adult male victims were also wounded in the barrage of gunfire but sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Following the attack, the suspects fled the scene in their vehicle, which authorities later identified as a black 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe.
Investigators believe the shooting that killed the Johnson cousins was a targeted attack.
The incident is also thought to have triggered a retaliatory shooting that occurred hours later just a few blocks away on Quincy Place NE, where three more men were wounded. While arrests were made in connection with the subsequent shooting, the case of the double homicide of James and Rashad Johnson remains unsolved.
The Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch is actively investigating the murders and has appealed to the public for assistance. A reward of up to $50,000 has been offered for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the individuals responsible for this deadly assault. The investigation into the deaths of James and Rashad Johnson is ongoing as their families and community await justice.
