Xavier Smith, a 35-year-old African American man from Montgomery, Alabama, was drawn into a confrontation that turned deadly in the early hours of March 9, 2019. That night, an altercation broke out inside a business along the 3400 block of McGehee Road. In the chaos that followed, Smith was shot, and the violence spilled beyond the walls of the business and into the quiet of the overnight streets.
Not long after, around 1:15 a.m., Smith arrived at Baptist Medical Center South as a walk-in gunshot victim. He told police he had been shot after the dispute, but in those first moments he described the shooter only as an unknown subject. Investigators began piecing together what happened inside the business and who was involved, working backward from the hospital visit to the scene of the altercation.
Smith fought to survive, but his injuries were severe. He remained hospitalized for days, and on March 22, 2019, he was pronounced dead from the wounds he suffered in the shooting. With his death, the case shifted from a shooting investigation into a homicide, and detectives focused on identifying the person responsible and the chain of events that led to the gunfire.
Police later said their investigation indicated the shooting stemmed from the altercation and that they identified Quartese Wright as the suspect. Wright, 31, was taken into custody and charged with murder. After the arrest, he was transported to the Montgomery County Detention Facility, where he was held on a $150,000 bond.
