On June 4, 2020, 22-year-old James Wayne Benford was among seven individuals fatally shot in a residence on Talucah Road in Valhermoso Springs, Alabama. The victims, ranging in age from 17 to 45, were discovered by Morgan County Sheriff's deputies responding to reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, authorities found part of the house on fire and the bodies of the victims, all of whom had sustained gunshot wounds.
