In the quiet community of Valhermoso Springs, Alabama, the life of 20-year-old Roger Lee Jones, Jr. was tragically cut short on June 4, 2020. The young man from Decatur was one of seven individuals found deceased at a residence in what would become one of the most horrific crimes in Morgan County's history. The scene that greeted law enforcement was grim, with the victims discovered inside a home that had been set ablaze in an attempt to conceal the violent acts that had transpired.
The investigation into the mass murder uncovered a dispute within a local motorcycle club known as the 'Seven Deadly Sins.' It was revealed that some of the victims, along with two identified suspects, were associated with this group. The motive for the killings appeared to stem from an internal conflict, with the perpetrators intending to 'wipe the slate clean' and dismantle the club. The victims, in addition to Jones, were identified as Tammy England Muzzey, 45; Emily Brooke Payne, 21; Jeramy Wade Roberts, 31; William Zane Hodgin, 18; James Wayne Benford, 22; and a 17-year-old female.
The quest for justice led investigators across the country to Oregon, where two suspects, John Michael Legg and Frederic Allen Rogers, were apprehended during a traffic stop on June 21, 2020. They were subsequently extradited back to Alabama to face capital murder charges. The legal proceedings that followed brought some measure of closure to the families of the victims. In 2024, Frederic Rogers was convicted of capital murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Later that year, on December 18, John Michael Legg pleaded guilty to capital murder and also received a sentence of life in prison without parole, ensuring both men would be held accountable for their roles in the tragic deaths of seven people.
