In the late hours of a summer night in Troy, Alabama, a gathering that began with music and socializing tragically devolved into violence, claiming the life of 25-year-old Jhakyndall 'Dooby' Johnson. The Black male was one of numerous people present at the Pike County Cattleman's Complex on U.S. 231 South in the early morning of August 15, 2020. An altercation erupted into a shootout as a rap concert held at the venue was concluding.
Amid the chaos of more than 50 gunshots, law
enforcement was called to disperse the large crowd. Upon their arrival, they discovered a scene of carnage with multiple gunshot victims. Johnson was found critically injured and was rushed by ambulance to a hospital in Dothan, where he ultimately succumbed to his wounds. Another man, 25-year-old Devonta Givens of Troy, also lost his life, dying at Troy Regional Medical Center shortly after the incident. Three other individuals were wounded in the shooting, with one reported to be in critical but stable condition at a Montgomery hospital.
The investigation into the deadly shooting led authorities to 24-year-old Roderick Talferio Roberson Jr. of Troy. On August 22, 2020, members of the U.S. Marshals Service and the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office apprehended Roberson in Rockdale County, Georgia. He was subsequently extradited back to Pike County, Alabama, to face legal proceedings. Roberson was charged with one count of capital murder in connection with the shooting and, as of early September 2020, was being held without bond in the Pike County Jail. The Pike County Cattleman's Association, owners of the venue, expressed their regret over the incident and stated their intention to review their leasing policies to improve safety at future events.
