In the late afternoon of February 12, 2021, emergency services in Montgomery, Alabama, were called to an apartment complex in the 2200 block of Woodley Square West following reports of gunfire. Upon their arrival at approximately 3 p.m., they discovered 19-year-old Ta'Byus McGhee, an African American male, with a life-threatening gunshot wound. Paramedics provided immediate medical care at the scene before rushing him to a local hospital for further treatment. Despite their efforts, McGhee ultimately succumbed to his injuries, marking the city's ninth homicide of the year.
The initial investigation into the shooting began without immediate suspects or a clear motive. However, law enforcement officials worked swiftly, and their efforts soon led to a significant development in the case. Shortly after the fatal incident, the Montgomery Police Department announced the arrest of 17-year-old Danzell McGhee. He was taken into custody and formally charged with murder in connection with Ta'Byus McGhee's death. Following his arrest, Danzell McGhee was transported to the Montgomery County Detention Facility. Authorities have not publicly disclosed the relationship between the victim and the accused, nor have they released further details about the circumstances that led to the deadly shooting.
