In the early hours of a Tuesday morning, a tragic workplace shooting shattered the lives of several families in Albertville, Alabama. Michael Lee Dobbins, a 29-year-old male, was one of two victims who lost their lives on June 15, 2021. The incident occurred at the Mueller Co. plant, a cornerstone of the community known as the 'Fire Hydrant Capital of the World'.
Dobbins, a resident of Boaz, had been working at the factory for almost a year, diligently saving to purchase a home and a car.
The gunman, identified as 34-year-old Andreas Deon Horton, was a coworker of the victims. Shortly before 2:30 a.m., Horton opened fire on his colleagues inside the facility. The attack, described by the police chief as 'completely unprovoked,' also claimed the life of David Lee Horton and left two other employees, Casey Sampson and Isaac Byrd, injured. There was no known familial relationship between Andreas Horton and David Lee Horton.
Following the shooting, a manhunt for the suspect ensued. Andreas Deon Horton was later found deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound inside a Jeep in Guntersville, approximately 15 miles from the plant. Multiple firearms were discovered in his vehicle. The motive behind the deadly assault remained unclear as the investigation began. The community was left to mourn the loss of two of its members and grapple with the senseless violence that had unfolded.
