On the warm summer night of July 28, 2021, the life of 25-year-old Kashea Green, an African American woman, was tragically cut short in Montgomery, Alabama. At approximately 10:40 p.m. in the 1800 block of Rosa Parks Avenue, a burst of gunfire shattered the evening's calm. When the Montgomery Police Department arrived at the scene, they found Ms. Green with multiple gunshot wounds; she was pronounced dead at the scene. The violent outburst also left three other individuals wounded.
A man suffered life-threatening injuries, while two other women sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigators quickly determined that the shooting was not a random act of violence, but a targeted attack. The community was left shaken by the incident, which marked the city's 44th homicide of the year. Friends and family remembered Kashea Green as a kind-hearted and promising young woman, and her untimely death left a profound void in the lives of those who knew her. Her funeral services were held on August 7, 2021, at Bryant Missionary Baptist Church, and she was laid to rest in Sawyer-Sanderson Cemetery.
In the weeks that followed the fatal shooting, law enforcement made progress in their investigation. On August 17, 2021, the U.S. Marshals Task Force apprehended 23-year-old Brandon Jenkins of Montgomery. Just a few days later, on August 21, a second suspect, 21-year-old Albert Pruitt, also from Montgomery, was taken into custody. Both men were charged with capital murder for the death of Kashea Green, as well as one count of first-degree assault and two counts of second-degree assault for the injuries sustained by the other victims. Following their arrests, both Jenkins and Pruitt were incarcerated at the Montgomery County Detention Facility.
