In the fall of 2021, the city of Northport, Alabama, was shaken by the violent and untimely death of 16-year-old Trinity Shannon. A student at Tuscaloosa County High School, Trinity was remembered by her family as a bubbly and outgoing young woman who had high standards and would do anything for anybody. Her life was tragically cut short on the evening of Tuesday, October 19, 2021, when she was fatally shot in the drive-thru of a Wendy's restaurant.
On that evening, Trinity was a passenger in a vehicle with a 20-year-old male driver and another female. While they were in the drive-thru, another vehicle pulled up, and shots were fired. Trinity was struck and killed, while the male driver was also injured in the shooting. Investigators with the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit quickly determined that the shooting was not a random act of violence. The driver of the vehicle Trinity was in told police that he had a long-standing history of disagreements with the alleged shooter and believed he was the intended target.
Within a short time, law enforcement identified a suspect and made an arrest. Nineteen-year-old Kenderius Sherman was taken into custody and subsequently charged with capital murder in connection with Trinity Shannon's death. The tragic incident was one of two teenage shooting deaths in Tuscaloosa County in less than a week, prompting community leaders and law enforcement to call for an end to the gun violence that had claimed the lives of two young people who were not the intended targets. Trinity's family, heartbroken by their loss, pleaded for elected officials to take action to prevent other families from experiencing similar tragedies.
