On a tragic day in Madison, Alabama, 26-year-old Courtney Spraggins, a female veterinary assistant and Certified Nursing Assistant, was found with a fatal gunshot wound on January 7, 2022. At the time of her death, she was seven months pregnant.
The investigation into her death quickly focused on a person of interest, David McCoy, who was an off-duty Huntsville police officer residing at the Weston Ranch Apartments where Spraggins' body was discovered. The couple had met on the dating app Tinder and were in a long-distance relationship. Friends and family described the relationship as tumultuous. Authorities later revealed that McCoy was engaged to another woman.
Huntsville Police supervisors secured the scene and requested the State Bureau of Investigation to take over the case to ensure impartiality. Within the same day, investigators gathered enough evidence to charge McCoy with capital murder. He was immediately relieved of his duties as a police officer and placed on administrative leave before being terminated. McCoy was arrested and has been held at the Madison County Jail without bond since January 7, 2022.
Subsequent investigations revealed a troubled history between Spraggins and McCoy. According to Spraggins' mother, McCoy was not happy about the pregnancy. Authorities reported that Spraggins had moved to Huntsville in December 2021 after quitting her job, but McCoy allegedly told her he 'needed more time.' When she contacted him about her situation, he reportedly responded with a text message saying, 'a bullet to the head sounds good to me.' On the day of her arrival in January, McCoy allegedly shot her in the head as she sat in her car. Investigators found mail addressed to Spraggins and ultrasound pictures in his patrol car. Although McCoy initially gave conflicting stories, he eventually confessed to the crime.
David McCoy was indicted on three counts of capital murder: one for the death of Courtney Spraggins, another for killing her and her unborn child, and a third for the death of a child under 14. Despite his alleged confession to investigators, McCoy pleaded not guilty to the charges. Prosecutors have stated their intention to seek the death penalty. The trial, initially set for an earlier date, has been postponed and is now scheduled for early 2025.
