Christopher Thomas, a 26-year-old Black man, was killed on August 6, 2022, in Montgomery, Alabama, after gunfire erupted on a stretch of Zelda Road that runs just west of Interstate 85. Police were called to the 2600 block of Zelda Road near the Ann Street intersection, where Thomas was found with a fatal gunshot wound. As word spread that a young man had died in broad daylight, investigators began piecing together what happened in the moments before the shooting, but early public statements offered little beyond the location and the fact that a homicide investigation was underway.
In the days that followed, the investigation produced its first major break. Montgomery police announced that Jimothy Ford, a 39-year-old man from Prattville, had been charged with murder in Thomas’s death. Ford was taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Task Force and booked into the Montgomery County Detention Facility, where he was held on a $1.5 million bond as the case moved forward through the courts.
Less than two weeks later, police said the case widened again. A second Prattville man, John Hollon III, 34, was also charged with murder in connection with Thomas’s killing, and he was likewise held on a $1.5 million bond. Authorities did not publicly spell out a motive or describe the roles each suspect was alleged to have played, and they released no detailed narrative of how the confrontation unfolded on Zelda Road—only that both men were being prosecuted for Thomas’s death.
