On what should have been a night of celebration to welcome the new year, chaos and violence erupted in downtown Mobile, Alabama, leading to the tragic death of 24-year-old Jatarious Reives. The male victim, also known as 'RED,' was fatally shot on December 31, 2022, during a large gathering on Dauphin Street. The incident, which unfolded around 11:15 p.m., sent shockwaves through the community as it left nine other individuals wounded.
Authorities quickly identified the event as a
gang-related shooting. According to police, an argument broke out between Reives and another man, escalating to the point of gunfire. Investigators believe that after the initial shots were fired, a friend of Reives returned fire. The ensuing exchange of bullets was described as indiscriminate, with innocent bystanders caught in the crossfire. Reives, a former student of B.C. Rain High School, was expecting a child at the time of his death. His family, already grieving the recent loss of another family member to gun violence, was left devastated.
In the wake of the shooting, police identified Thomas Earl Thomas Jr., 22, as the primary suspect in Reives' death. Thomas, who was also injured during the incident, was taken into custody upon his release from the hospital. He faces a string of serious charges, including one count of murder, multiple counts of assault, and shooting into both an occupied and an unoccupied building. Authorities have indicated that both Reives and Thomas had ties to local gangs. The investigation into the deadly New Year's Eve violence remains ongoing, with the possibility of additional charges being filed.
