Antarrio Hubbard, a 20-year-old Black male from Montgomery, was fatally shot on March 30, 2023, and what began as a frantic ride to the hospital quickly turned into a homicide investigation. Police said officers were called to a local hospital around 7 p.m. after Hubbard had been brought there by personal vehicle. He was later pronounced dead. Investigators traced the shooting itself to the 400 block of Buford Street, just off Mt.
Meigs Road, a neighborhood that suddenly became the center of a widening murder case.
In the first hours after his death, police released very little beyond the location and the fact that Hubbard had been shot. His death was soon formally identified as Montgomery’s latest homicide, and the case moved with unusual speed. Within days, Montgomery police announced the first arrest, saying 23-year-old Deandre Byers had been identified as a suspect in Hubbard’s killing. Byers was taken into custody on April 3, 2023, and placed in the Montgomery County Detention Facility with no bond. One report also said he was charged not only with murder in Hubbard’s death but with drug trafficking at the time of that arrest.
The investigation did not stop there. On April 6, police said a 16-year-old juvenile had been charged as the second suspect in the shooting death. The next day, April 7, investigators announced a third arrest, identifying a 15-year-old juvenile as another suspect in Hubbard’s killing. That teenager was placed in the Montgomery County Youth Detention Facility. By the end of April, the case had grown again when police said a 17-year-old juvenile had become the fourth person charged. Authorities said the fourth suspect was taken into custody on April 28, 2023, by the U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force and then placed in detention.
Taken together, the public record shows that Hubbard’s death was not treated as the act of a lone suspect. Police publicly tied four people to the killing: Deandre Byers and three juveniles ages 15, 16, and 17. The names of the juvenile suspects were not publicly released in the reports that followed, and publicly available coverage did not appear to provide later details on trials, convictions, or final courtroom outcomes in the case. What remains clear from the reporting is the arc of those early weeks: a young man shot on Buford Street, rushed to a hospital too late to be saved, and an investigation that quickly widened until four suspects had been charged in connection with Antarrio Hubbard’s death.
