In the late afternoon of December 2, 2023, the Inglenook community in Birmingham, Alabama, was shattered by the sound of a shootout near a Shell gas station on East Lake Boulevard. Responding to multiple 911 calls just before 4 p.m., police were dispatched to the 3400 block of 38th Place North. There, they discovered 24-year-old Courtney Dion Spencer, a Black male, inside a vehicle parked in a driveway, suffering from a gunshot wound.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel arrived on the scene and pronounced him deceased.
The preliminary investigation suggests that the shooting that claimed Spencer's life was a targeted attack. During the incident, multiple houses in the vicinity were also struck by gunfire, though miraculously, no other injuries were reported. The violence of that day left a community shaken and a family grieving the loss of a young man.
As of now, no suspects have been taken into custody in connection with the murder of Courtney Dion Spencer. The Birmingham Police Department's Homicide Unit is actively investigating the case and has urged anyone with information to come forward. A cash reward is being offered for tips that lead to an arrest, as authorities continue their search for those responsible for this fatal shooting. His death marked the 116th homicide investigation in Birmingham for 2023.
