Keith Powell, a 45-year-old Black man who lived in Montgomery, Alabama, was known to some by the nickname "Pooh." A graduate of Carver High School, he worked cutting hair. His life was cut short on a Tuesday afternoon, leaving a community to mourn his sudden loss.
Just after noon on December 5, 2023, Montgomery police and fire medics were called to the 600 block of Williamson Road, near Ray Drive. At the scene, they discovered Mr. Powell suffering from a fatal gunshot wound.
First responders pronounced him dead.
The Montgomery Police Department initially opened a death investigation. However, as officers gathered evidence, they soon reclassified the case as a homicide. The investigation quickly led them to identify a suspect in the shooting.
Police arrested Raytoria McBryde, a 36-year-old Montgomery woman, in connection with Mr. Powell’s death. She was subsequently charged with murder and booked into the Montgomery County Detention Facility, where she was ordered to be held without bond. Authorities did not release any information regarding a possible motive or the circumstances that led to the shooting. As of December 2023, the case against McBryde was proceeding through the legal system.
