In the winter of 2023, a festive evening in Phenix City, Alabama, took a tragic turn, ending the life of 23-year-old Ryan S. Boles. On December 12th, Boles was leaving a Christmas party when he was fatally shot in the back parking lot of Synovus Bank on 13th Street. A graduate of Columbus State University and an employee at CTV Beam, his sudden death sent shockwaves through the community.
The investigation into the senseless act of violence moved swiftly.
Within a couple of days, law enforcement officials had made their first arrest, taking an unidentified 16-year-old into custody on charges of capital murder and robbery. The search for a second, even younger, suspect was then announced to the public. The Phenix City Police Department, in conjunction with the Columbus Police Department, began looking for 13-year-old Kumasie Ishmeal Ahmad in connection with the case.
The search for the young suspect concluded on December 21, 2023, when Ahmad was apprehended by Columbus Police at the Ashley Station apartments. He was taken into custody and placed in a juvenile detention facility to await extradition hearings. As the legal process unfolded, the older teenager, identified as Jadarius Snipes, faced the adult justice system.
In a turn of events that highlighted the complexities of the justice system when dealing with juvenile offenders, the two teenagers received vastly different sentences. Kumasie Ishmeal Ahmad, the 13-year-old who was identified as the shooter, received a seven-year sentence to be served in the Alabama juvenile justice system. Jadarius Snipes, who was 16 at the time of the crime, was convicted of felony murder. Despite not being the one who pulled the trigger, he was handed a significant 45-year prison sentence. During the emotional sentencing hearing, it was revealed that Ryan Boles' father was a retired FBI agent. The courtroom proceedings were further marked by an outburst from Snipes' mother, who was arrested for disrupting the hearing.
