In the spring of 2024, a weekend in Mobile County was marked by a series of violent events that left three men dead in less than a day. One of these men was Donta Evans, a 33-year-old who was fatally shot on the evening of Saturday, April 27th. The incident occurred on Telegraph Road in the city of Prichard, just north of Mobile. Authorities have suggested that Evans, who was reportedly from Texas, was in the area for a drug transaction that ultimately turned deadly.
The investigation
into the shooting led to the identification of several individuals believed to be involved. In May, one of the suspects, Leric Davis, was apprehended in Cobb County, Georgia, and subsequently charged in connection with Evans' murder. A second suspect, 19-year-old Robert Lamar McMillan, was taken into custody in July following a standoff with law enforcement at a residence on Cortez Drive in Mobile. McMillan faced a slew of charges, including murder and first-degree assault. At the time of this new arrest, he was already out on bond for previous offenses, and the judge ordered him to be held without bond for the charges related to Evans' death.
As the legal process began to unfold, investigators announced they were also seeking a third person of interest, 24-year-old Ton Curtis, although no warrant had been issued for his arrest at that time. The Mobile County Sheriff's Office indicated that they believed the suspects were connected to various gang-related criminal activities in the area, with many of these incidents stemming from drug ripoffs. The case against McMillan and Davis is set to proceed through the court system, with arraignments and preliminary hearings scheduled in the weeks following their arrests.
