Indyah Knight was a 12-year-old girl from Montgomery, Alabama, who loved the Chisholm Boys and Girls Club so much that her mother called it her second home. Her mother, Bria Knight, said she could never have imagined a life without her daughter. A Black female, Indyah’s life was cut short in the spring of 2024, leaving her family and friends to gather for a balloon release at the place where she had been so loved.
In the early morning hours of May 31, 2024, Indyah was shot in the 4100
block of Keating Drive. First responders arrived sometime before 2:30 a.m. and rushed her to a local hospital. Due to the severity of her injuries, she was later transferred to a specialized hospital in Birmingham for advanced care. Despite the efforts of her medical teams, Indyah passed away from her injuries a week later, on June 7.
The Montgomery Police Department immediately launched a homicide investigation into the young girl's death. The first major development came on June 18, 2024, when police took a 15-year-old male into custody. The unnamed teenager was identified as a suspect and charged with three counts of capital murder. He was then transported to the Montgomery County Youth Detention Facility.
Just two days later, on June 20, authorities announced a second arrest. Working with the United States Marshals Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force, Montgomery police arrested 19-year-old Jo’Terrion Deontay Tucker of Prattville. He was charged with one count of capital murder and two counts of capital murder from outside a vehicle. Tucker was booked into the Montgomery County Detention Facility. Police have not released a motive for the shooting. As of June 2024, both suspects are in custody and the case is proceeding through the justice system.
