In the predawn hours of June 18, 2024, the life of 27-year-old Darius Gunn was tragically cut short in Montgomery, Alabama. Responding to a call just after midnight, Montgomery Police and medics discovered Gunn on the ground, suffering from a fatal gunshot wound to the head. Despite their efforts, first responders were unable to revive him, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a potential suspect known to witnesses as 'Zep'.
This individual was later identified as 19-year-old Zephaniah Lowery of Montgomery. According to court records and witness statements, the motive for the killing appeared to be twofold. Lowery allegedly intended to rob Gunn of his iPhone, and there was an underlying animosity stemming from Gunn's presence at the earlier stabbing of Lowery's sister.
Following the identification of 'Zep' as Zephaniah Lowery, authorities moved swiftly to apprehend him. On a Thursday in July, Lowery was arrested and formally charged with the murder of Darius Gunn. Due to the accusation that the homicide occurred during the commission of a robbery, the charge was elevated to capital murder. Lowery is currently being held at the Montgomery County Detention Facility without the possibility of bond as he awaits further legal proceedings.
