In the late summer of 2024, the quiet community of Slocomb, Alabama, was rocked by the grim discovery of the remains of 41-year-old Benito Morales Guzman. A concerned employer had reported him missing on August 27th after he failed to show up for work. This report led Geneva County Sheriff's deputies to Guzman's residence in the Fadette area, a home he shared with his 26-year-old partner, Joselina Elizabeth Lopez.
Upon their arrival, deputies were met with a strong, unpleasant odor
emanating from a Toyota Corolla parked on the property. Inside the vehicle, a horrific scene unfolded. They found between 10 and 15 trash bags containing the dismembered body of Guzman. Also in the car were electric chainsaws, one of which reportedly had human flesh on the blade, cleaning supplies, a diaper bag, and a bloodied box of baby formula. An autopsy would later reveal that Guzman had been shot twice with a. 22-caliber revolver, which was also recovered from the car with five of its six cartridges spent. It is believed that the couple's young child may have been present in the home at the time of the murder.
Joselina Elizabeth Lopez was arrested and charged with the murder of Benito Morales Guzman. During a subsequent bond hearing, she claimed to have acted in self-defense. However, investigators found no evidence of a struggle on her person. It was also discovered that Lopez had recently purchased four electric chainsaws from a local Lowe's. Authorities believe she was planning to flee to Mexico or Guatemala with her child, as her passport and the child's birth certificate were found. While in custody, Lopez was reportedly overheard on a phone call with a relative saying, 'I should have left earlier.' She is currently being held in the Geneva County Jail without bond.
