On the evening of April 18, 2009, in the 1400 block of 8th Street, NW, a man was brutally assaulted and sustained multiple stab wounds. The immediate aftermath of the attack was a fight for survival, a battle that would quietly continue for years.
The victim of the stabbing was 39-year-old Jose Lopez. For six years, he lived with the consequences of that violent night, enduring complications from the grievous injuries he had suffered. His struggle came to an end on June 14, 2015, when he passed away.
An investigation into his death would later connect it directly to the wounds inflicted upon him years earlier.
Following an autopsy, the medical examiner ruled Jose Lopez's death a homicide, concluding that it was the direct result of complications from the multiple stab wounds he sustained in the 2009 assault.
