In the spring of 2015, a brutal act of violence on a Washington, D.C. street set in motion a tragedy that would end a man's life months later. On the morning of May 10th, 65-year-old Santos Garcia was visiting a friend in the 300 block of Franklin Street NE. As he stood in a doorway, he was suddenly and viciously attacked by an unknown assailant who proceeded to rob him. The attacker fled with a small amount of cash, leaving Mr. Garcia beaten and injured.
Following the assault, Santos Garcia was treated for his injuries, which at the time did not appear to be life-threatening. However, in the ensuing months, his health deteriorated as a direct result of the blunt force trauma he sustained during the robbery. On September 9, 2015, four months after the attack, Mr. Garcia succumbed to his injuries and passed away.
The medical examiner subsequently ruled his death a homicide.
The case of Santos Garcia's murder remains unsolved. Despite a police investigation and a reward being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible, no suspects have been publicly identified, and no arrests have been made in connection with the robbery and his subsequent death. The search for justice for Santos Garcia continues, his case a somber reminder of the lasting and devastating consequences of a violent crime.
