On April 9, 2022, 30-year-old U.S. Army Sergeant Julian Christopher Francis Jr. was fatally shot in Anchorage, Alaska. The incident occurred around 8:30 a.m. at the Hyatt House hotel in Midtown Anchorage, where Francis was near the indoor swimming pool. Witnesses reported that he had been socializing with a group when 22-year-old Brent A. Smith allegedly approached, produced a handgun, and shot Francis before fleeing the scene.
