The life of Christopher Dajuan Eddins, a 25-year-old Black man from Bessemer, Alabama, was violently cut short on the night of Friday, August 30, 2024. The tragedy unfolded at a Citgo gas station on 4th Avenue North in a triple homicide that also claimed the lives of Ronald Demetrius Dixon Jr., 20, and Wesley Fowler Jr., 41. Shortly before midnight, assailants in a vehicle opened fire on the men in the gas station's parking lot.
In a desperate attempt to escape the gunfire, Eddins and the others ran into the convenience store, but their attackers pursued them inside and continued the assault, shooting all three men to death.
The brazen and targeted nature of the killings, much of which was captured on surveillance footage, prompted an intensive investigation by the Bessemer Police Department. Within days, authorities announced the arrest of 20-year-old Raukeem Bernard Cunningham, who was charged with capital murder. Investigators revealed that at the time of the shooting, Cunningham was out on bond for a 2022 manslaughter charge involving the death of a 15-year-old girl. Following his arrest for the gas station homicides, his bond in the prior case was revoked.
The investigation soon led to two more arrests. Willie Stokes III, 25, was taken into custody and charged with first-degree hindering prosecution. Court records allege that Stokes aided Cunningham after the killings by purchasing gasoline to set a vehicle on fire. Shortly thereafter, police arrested a third suspect, 22-year-old Jeffery Dwaine Moody Jr., and charged him with attempted murder in connection with the incident.
The community’s grief was compounded by further violence just days after the murders. During a candlelight vigil held for the victims at the site of the shooting, an unknown individual opened fire into the crowd, wounding several people. This subsequent attack underscored the profound and tragic impact the initial homicides had on the Bessemer community.
Police have stated their belief that more than one shooter was involved in the gas station attack and were searching for other persons of interest. Raukeem Cunningham is being held without bond. In October 2024, a judge denied him bond and forwarded his capital murder case to a grand jury for consideration.
