In the early morning hours of August 24, 2023, the city of Birmingham, Alabama, became the scene of a fatal encounter that cut short the life of Snir Sonny Lalum, a 44-year-old Israeli man. Known for his generous spirit, Lalum, a co-owner of Insta-Movers, had a daily routine of taking his employees to a nearby convenience store for food and drinks before the workday began.
Tragically, on this particular Thursday, this simple act of kindness seemingly led to his untimely death.
At approximately 5:15 a.m., Birmingham Police Department officers were dispatched to the Insta-Movers warehouse located on Walter Davis Drive. Upon arrival, they discovered Lalum in the warehouse bay, unresponsive and suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite the immediate life-saving efforts of the responding officers and subsequent medical attention at Birmingham's UAB Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 5:50 a.m. The preliminary investigation suggested that at least one suspect approached Lalum at his place of business, shot him, and then fled the scene.
The investigation into the homicide quickly progressed, leading to the identification of two suspects. On August 25, the Birmingham Police Department's crime reduction team arrested 24-year-old Sebastian Deonta Ross in Hoover, Alabama. Subsequently, on October 4, the U.S. Marshals Service apprehended 20-year-old Jaquz Hoffman in Aliceville, Alabama. Both men were charged with capital murder in connection with the robbery and shooting of Snir Lalum.
Lalum, who had been living in the United States for a number of years, was remembered by friends and associates as a happy and kind-hearted individual. He is survived by his wife and young son. While his life was violently taken, the swift arrests of the alleged perpetrators brought a measure of justice to his grieving family and community. Both suspects are in the custody of the Jefferson County Jail with no bond.
