In the late afternoon of a spring day in Birmingham, Alabama, the life of 28-year-old Tedarrius Quentez Smith, a Black male, came to a sudden and violent end. On April 4, 2023, Jefferson County Sheriff's deputies attempted to pull over Smith in a traffic stop, citing an outstanding warrant. A pursuit ensued when Smith did not stop, leading to a dead end in the Collegeville public housing community.
According to law enforcement, upon reaching the 3000 block of 30th Court North, Smith
exited his vehicle armed with a handgun. It was at this point that deputies allege he pointed the weapon at them, and in response, they opened fire. Smith was fatally wounded in a grassy area beneath a bridge, his body later covered by a white sheet as investigators processed the scene.
The official narrative of an armed confrontation was quickly disputed by those who knew Smith best. His family, arriving at the chaotic scene, expressed their profound grief and disbelief. They insisted that he was not in possession of a firearm at the time of the shooting and had not fired any shots. His mother and other relatives voiced their belief that he had been unjustly killed. They also suggested that the initial call that led to the police interaction may have stemmed from a false accusation of kidnapping made by his wife. A father of nine, Smith's death left a significant void in the lives of his children and family. As of the immediate aftermath of the incident, no arrests had been made in connection with his death, as the case was being handled as an officer-involved shooting.
