William Cody Vaughn, a 29-year-old male from Blountsville, Alabama, died on September 14, 2023, following a shooting in the Highland Lake area of Blount County. The events leading to his death began when the Blount County Sheriff's Office received multiple reports of attempted break-ins in the Sugar Land Lake vicinity, with Vaughn identified as the suspect.
Later that day, a woman checking her mail on County Road 29 reported feeling threatened by Vaughn's hurried approach. She retreated into her home and locked the door. Vaughn then attempted to gain entry into the residence, prompting the woman to call 911. As deputies were on their way, the woman's husband arrived and confronted Vaughn, who by then had gotten into his own vehicle.
According to the Blount County Sheriff's Office, Vaughn brandished a firearm during the confrontation. In response, the homeowner shot him. Deputies arrived immediately after the shooting and administered first aid until paramedics arrived. Vaughn was then transported to UAB Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Following an investigation, the Blount County Sheriff's Office announced that no charges would be filed against the homeowner. The shooting was determined to be an act of self-defense. A memorial service for William Cody Vaughn was held on September 18, 2023, at Lemley Funeral Home in Oneonta.
