In the early morning hours of August 20, 2022, the life of Jamari Rashaad Smith, a 22-year-old Black/African American male, was tragically cut short in Birmingham, Alabama. At approximately 12:39 a.m., the sound of gunfire pierced the night in the 4400 block of Ishkooda-Wenonah Road Southwest, prompting multiple calls to the Birmingham Police Department.
Upon their arrival, officers discovered a grim scene.
Jamari Smith was found lying in the front yard of a residence, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel were dispatched to the location, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced deceased at the scene. The incident marked the city's 86th homicide investigation of the year.
According to the preliminary investigation, Smith had been engaged in a conversation with an unidentified male outside the residence just moments before the fatal shots were fired. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, this individual fled the scene and has remained at large. Authorities have not yet publicly identified a suspect or established a clear motive for the killing.
