On February 21, 2022, at approximately 7:15 p.m., Birmingham Police Department officers responded to reports of gunfire at an apartment complex in the 1700 block of 33rd Street North, located in the Norwood neighborhood of Birmingham, Alabama. Upon arrival, they discovered 26-year-old Joshua Isaiah Carpenter lying unresponsive in a grassy area near the apartments, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel pronounced him deceased at the scene.
