On a Saturday afternoon in Birmingham, Alabama, a teenager’s life was cut short during a violent encounter in a downtown parking lot. Chico Guest, a 17-year-old male from the nearby community of Center Point, was fatally shot on February 5, 2022. The incident occurred just before 4 p.m. at a lot located at 10th Avenue and 18th Street North. Police stated that Chico and a friend, 19-year-old Kambran Tremaine Young, were attempting to rob a parking lot attendant.
During the robbery
attempt, the attendant on duty discharged a firearm, striking both teenagers. When Birmingham Police officers arrived, they found Chico on the ground with a gunshot wound to his chest. Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel pronounced him deceased at the scene. Shortly thereafter, authorities learned that Young had arrived at UAB Hospital with multiple non-life-threatening gunshot wounds from the same event. According to Young, he was shot four times in the back and leg as he ran away after his friend fell.
The parking lot attendant cooperated fully with the investigation. After reviewing the circumstances, the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office ruled the shooting death of Chico Guest to be a justifiable homicide, determining that the attendant had acted in self-defense. No charges were filed against the attendant.
Although he was also wounded in the shooting, Kambran Tremaine Young faced serious legal consequences. Investigators pursued charges against him under Alabama's Felony Murder Rule, which holds a person responsible for a death that occurs during the commission of a felony they are involved in, even if they did not directly cause the death. Detectives obtained a warrant, and Young was arrested and charged with the murder of his friend. He was subsequently booked into the Jefferson County Jail.
The case concluded over two years later. On April 8, 2024, Kambran Tremaine Young pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter in connection with Chico Guest's death. He was sentenced to serve up to 15 years in prison.
