On January 2, 2022, 27-year-old McKayla Kapriest Roberts of Charleston, South Carolina, was fatally struck by a vehicle while walking in the travel lanes of Interstate 20 near Irondale, Alabama. The incident occurred around 6:37 p.m. between mile markers 134 and 135. The driver involved did not stop and left the scene.
