In the late afternoon of October 6, 2022, the life of 23-year-old Calvin Maurice Chambers, a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short. Responding to reports of a shooting at the Charter East Apartments in Center Point, Alabama, at approximately 4:38 p.m., Jefferson County Sheriff's deputies arrived to a grim scene. There, they discovered Chambers, a resident of Birmingham, who had been fatally shot.
The investigation into the shooting moved swiftly. Utilizing surveillance technology, authorities were able to quickly identify a vehicle suspected of being involved in the incident. A brief pursuit ensued, but deputies were successful in stopping the vehicle and apprehending the five individuals inside without injury. Among those taken into custody was 18-year-old William Ayala Torres. He was subsequently charged with capital murder in the death of Calvin Chambers. His bond was set at $106,000.
In addition to the primary suspect, four other individuals were arrested in connection with the circumstances surrounding the shooting. One 20-year-old male faced a felony charge of first-degree marijuana possession, while two other men and one woman were charged with misdemeanor second-degree marijuana possession.
Calvin, born on April 23, 1999, was remembered by his family as a friendly and helpful person who was always there for those who asked for his assistance. He had attended both Birmingham City and Tarrant City schools. His family, including his mother, father, siblings, and fiancée, were left to mourn the sudden and violent loss of a young man known for his ability to make people smile. Funeral services were held on October 22, 2022, followed by his burial.
