In the late hours of a Friday in Bessemer, Alabama, a dispute at the intersection of 24th Street and Berkley Avenue turned deadly. On May 6, 2022, Warren Oliver 'Berney' Weatherspoon, a 48-year-old Black/African American male, was involved in an argument that tragically escalated. In the ensuing violence, Weatherspoon was shot. He was rushed to UAB Hospital in Birmingham for medical attention.
Despite the efforts of medical professionals, Weatherspoon succumbed to his injuries in the
early morning of May 7, 2022. The community was left to mourn the loss of a man who had moved to Bessemer from his hometown of York, Alabama. He was a father to three children, DeWarren and Trevez Weatherspoon, and Cerriunna Jackson. His roots were in Cuba, Alabama, where he was raised and had graduated from Sumter County High School.
The individual responsible for the shooting, a 17-year-old male, fled the scene immediately after the incident. However, his freedom was short-lived. The following evening, the teenage suspect turned himself into the Bessemer Police Department. He was subsequently charged with murder and was to be prosecuted as an adult for the death of Warren Weatherspoon.
