On May 7, 2022, 48-year-old Warren Oliver "Berney" Weatherspoon of York, Alabama, was fatally shot in Bessemer. The incident occurred shortly before midnight on May 6, near the 2400 block of Berkeley Avenue. Weatherspoon sustained gunshot wounds during an assault and was transported to UAB Hospital in Birmingham, where he succumbed to his injuries at 2:47 a.m.
