In the early hours of a February morning in 2022, the life of 26-year-old Alexander Kade Lanier of Greenwood, South Carolina, came to a violent end in Oxford, Alabama. Just after midnight, Lanier carjacked a vehicle at gunpoint in the parking lot of a Waffle House. An Oxford police officer was positioned across the street and witnessed the event, immediately initiating a pursuit of the stolen car.
For nearly 20 minutes, Lanier led officers on a chase. During the pursuit, he fired multiple shots at the pursuing officers. The chase finally concluded on Airport Road near Alabama 21, where the situation escalated further. In the ensuing confrontation, officers shot and killed Lanier. The weapon found in Lanier's possession was reported to have been stolen.
Authorities later revealed that Alexander Kade Lanier had an extensive criminal record, with a rap sheet reportedly 48 pages long. It was also discovered that he was supposed to be in a court-ordered rehabilitation facility but had walked away. The St. Clair County Sheriff's Office was tasked with investigating the officer-involved shooting.
