Brian S. Boots, 32, died from injuries suffered in a head-on collision on Christmas Day on Alabama Highway 261 between Shelby County Highway 105 and Starkey Street in Helena. The driver of the other vehicle, Chad Wayne Hughes, was determined to be traveling in excess of 100 mph on the wrong side of the road while under the influence of alcohol, marijuana and prescription drugs. Hughes was arrested in May 2020 and charged with murder, DUI, reckless driving and unlawful possession of marijuana
