On the afternoon of September 25, 2021, in Birmingham, Alabama, 26-year-old Jahshua Almond Rogers, an African American male, was ambushed and fatally shot. The incident occurred at approximately 4:30 p.m. in the Pratt City area, at a small apartment complex located on Dougan Avenue. When Birmingham police officers arrived at the scene, they discovered Rogers unresponsive outside a vehicle that had been riddled with bullets.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators determined that Rogers had been specifically targeted in the shooting. The investigation into his death continued for several months. In April 2022, the Birmingham Police Department made an arrest in connection with the murder. Eighteen-year-old Koreon Daisean Johnson was taken into custody and charged with the capital murder of Jahshua Almond Rogers. Johnson was subsequently booked into the Jefferson County Jail without bond and was indicted on the charge seven months later.
While awaiting trial for Rogers' murder, Johnson was released on bond in January 2023. However, his freedom was short-lived. In April 2023, he was arrested again and faced new capital murder charges in connection with a separate incident that occurred on November 12, 2021. In that case, he was charged with the shooting deaths of 22-year-old Anthony Murray and 24-year-old Ronald Smith Jr., an event that also resulted in injuries to two other individuals. Furthermore, Johnson is also charged with attempted murder in a third incident from October 18, 2021, where another man was shot in the neck with an assault rifle. Koreon Daisean Johnson remains in custody without bond, and a trial date for the charges related to the death of Jahshua Almond Rogers has not yet been set.
