On a Sunday afternoon in Birmingham, Alabama, a tragic and violent series of events unfolded, leaving two people dead, including 34-year-old Brian Anthony Adkins. The incident, which took place on May 16, 2021, began with a heated argument that escalated to gunfire near Brother Bryan Park.
Adkins, a Black male, was with Courtney Jan Ashley, 35, when they were approached by a man later identified as Brian Timothy Dunne.
Witnesses reported that an argument broke out between Dunne and the couple, who were walking a dog at the time. The verbal altercation quickly turned deadly as Dunne produced a firearm and shot both Adkins and Ashley. Adkins was pronounced dead at the scene, while Ashley was rushed to a nearby hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries.
Following the shooting, Dunne fled the area, sparking a manhunt by the Birmingham Police Department. Investigators were able to track him to an apartment building located in the 1800 block of 10th Avenue South. As officers approached, Dunne opened fire, injuring four officers in the ensuing shootout. Two of the officers sustained more serious injuries. The exchange of gunfire ended with Dunne being fatally shot by the police.
Authorities later revealed that Dunne and Courtney Ashley were acquaintances and had been in a dating relationship. The motive for the initial argument that led to the double homicide was not immediately clear. Due to the death of the suspect, there were no arrests made in the murders of Brian Anthony Adkins and Courtney Jan Ashley. The Alabama Bureau of Investigation was tasked with overseeing the investigation into the officer-involved shooting.
