In the late hours of a June evening in Birmingham, Alabama, a dispute tragically escalated, leaving one man dead. Stephone Lamar Jemison was found inside a home on Avenue Z in Ensley with gunshot wounds. The incident, which occurred just before 11 p.m. on June 26, 2020, was preceded by a verbal argument.
Emergency services transported Jemison to UAB Hospital, but his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead. The Birmingham Police Department launched a homicide investigation into the shooting. However, after reviewing the evidence and circumstances surrounding the altercation, investigators came to a significant conclusion.
In September 2020, the police department announced that the shooting of Stephone Lamar Jemison was deemed justifiable. According to Sgt. Rod Mauldin of the Birmingham Police Department, the investigation found that the shooting was an act of self-defense. Consequently, no charges were filed in connection with Jemison's death. This was noted as the 12th homicide in Birmingham to be ruled justifiable in 2020.
