On January 13, 2019, 44-year-old Sergeant WyTasha Carter of the Birmingham Police Department was fatally shot while investigating a series of vehicle break-ins near the 900 block of Fifth Avenue North. Responding to reports of suspicious activity, Sgt. Carter and his team approached two individuals suspected of attempting to break into cars.
