On a summer evening in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, the life of 18-year-old Elexis Lashelle McCool, a Black female, was tragically cut short on June 10, 2019. She had been driving with two teenage boys, aged 14 and 15, when the younger of the two began recklessly firing a gun out of the car window. A bullet pierced the driver's seat, striking and fatally wounding McCool.
In the moments that followed, a grim sequence of events unfolded as the two teenagers moved her to the back seat of the vehicle.
After relocating her, the boys drove to west Tuscaloosa. It was there they confirmed she had succumbed to her injuries. Rather than seeking help, they took her phone and identification, locked the car with her inside, and discarded the keys, abandoning the scene and the young woman who had just lost her life. Their actions left a community in shock and a family to grapple with an unimaginable loss. McCool was remembered by those who knew her as a sweet and kind individual, a student at Northridge High School with a vibrant personality whose smile brought joy to many.
The subsequent investigation led authorities to the two teenage boys. The 14-year-old, who fired the fatal shot, was taken into custody and charged with murder. His 15-year-old companion was also arrested and faced a series of charges, including abuse of a corpse, theft, and obstruction of justice. Both were held at the Tuscaloosa Juvenile Detention Center. The tragic and senseless death of Elexis McCool reverberated through the city, prompting local officials to reinforce juvenile curfew laws in an effort to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
