Herman Paige, a 46-year-old African-American male, was fatally shot on Sunday, May 11, 2014, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The incident that led to his death began as a birthday celebration at Big C's Bar, a tavern he owned on North 12th Street. As the night drew to a close and the bar was shutting down, an argument erupted between Paige and a patron.
The dispute started when Paige asked everyone to leave the establishment. One of the patrons, Dwayne Jobe, who was 28 years old at the time, insisted on waiting inside for his mother who was in the restroom. Paige suggested that Jobe could wait for her outside, which escalated the disagreement. Despite his mother's attempts to calm him down after she came out of the restroom, Jobe remained agitated and had to be forcibly removed from the bar. The confrontation spilled outside, where a physical fight broke out.
Witnesses reported that after the initial altercation outside, Jobe re-entered the bar. Several gunshots were heard shortly after. When police arrived at the scene, they discovered Paige lying on the floor at the entrance of his tavern. He had sustained two gunshot wounds, one to his right finger and another to his upper right chest. Despite life-saving efforts, he succumbed to his injuries. A medical examiner later confirmed that the gunshot wound to the chest was the cause of his death, and the case was ruled a homicide.
Following an investigation, an arrest warrant was issued for Dwayne Jobe. He was charged with one count of first-degree reckless homicide with the use of a dangerous weapon and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon, as he had a prior felony conviction from 2005 for possession with intent to deliver heroin. Jobe was not immediately taken into custody at the time the charges were filed.
