On a Sunday morning in June of 2016, the life of 29-year-old Remone Reed, a Black male, was tragically cut short in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. On June 19th, police responded to a call and discovered Reed's body in an alley near 49th and Fiebrantz. He had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to his left eye and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the homicide led authorities to 29-year-old Dimitri McDaniels of Milwaukee.
A criminal complaint filed against McDaniels charged him in connection with Reed's death. Forensic evidence became a crucial component of the case as investigators were able to link the 9mm caliber bullet recovered from the scene of Reed's death to another shooting that had occurred just three days earlier.
On Thursday, June 16th, a man was shot and wounded during an alleged robbery attempt near Teutonia and Villard. The bullet recovered from this incident was analyzed by the Wisconsin State Crime Lab. The analysis revealed that the bullet from the June 16th shooting and the one that killed Remone Reed were fired from the same firearm, directly linking McDaniels to both crime scenes.
