A beloved father is killed on his family farm In the winter of 1993, a profound loss struck a family in Danville, Virginia, with the death of Silas Calloway, a 71-year-old African American man. A retired construction worker and farmer, he was a cherished father and grandfather. On February 20, 1993, his life was brought to a violent end on his own farm.
It was his son, Silas Jr., who made the devastating discovery. He found his father inside his yellow pickup truck on the property, his body covered with a coat.
An investigation would later reveal that the elder Calloway had been beaten and strangled to death. The presence of his empty wallet found nearby suggested a robbery had taken place.
In the years that followed, the family voiced concerns that the initial investigation may have been compromised. They noted that the death was first considered to be the result of a heart attack, and family members were permitted inside the home before investigators had an opportunity to secure the scene and collect potential evidence.
