On a tragic day in August 2016, the life of Brian M. King, a 24-year-old male from Richmond, Virginia, was cut short. On August 23rd, officers were dispatched to the 5000 block of Snead Road after reports of gunfire. Arriving at the Foxwood Apartments complex, they discovered King in a courtyard, suffering from a gunshot wound. He was quickly transported to a nearby hospital, but unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into his death spanned several years and crossed state lines. The persistence of law enforcement, particularly Detective Sandy Ledbetter-Clarkson, proved crucial in the pursuit of justice for King and his family. The investigation eventually led them to Buckeye, Arizona, where a significant breakthrough in the case occurred in March 2020. More than three years after King's death, the U.S. Marshals, in a coordinated effort with marshals from North Dakota and Richmond, apprehended Darnell D. Lee Jr., then 34 years old.
Lee was charged with the murder of Brian M. King and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Alongside him, his girlfriend, Amanda L. Miller, who was 30 at the time, was also arrested. Miller faced charges of being an accessory, accused of assisting Lee in his efforts to evade capture for over three years. The arrests brought a measure of resolution to a case that had been part of a violent year in the city of Richmond.
