A married couple is found deceased in their car\n On a late summer day, August 24, 1968, a husband and wife, Elizabeth and Thomas Whittemore, were discovered deceased in their vehicle on Fire Hill Road in Pittsford, Vermont. The couple, who lived in the neighboring city of Rutland, had both been shot to death. Their deaths were quickly determined to be homicides.
Elizabeth, who was 30 years old, was found slumped against the right side of the car, while her husband, Thomas, aged 32, was in the passenger seat.
Subsequent autopsies revealed that both had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the back of their heads. The firearm used in the commission of the crime, thought to be a. 22 caliber revolver, has never been located by authorities.
Investigators explored various motives, including the possibility of a robbery. Two days of cash receipts and a money bag were reported missing from the Whittemores' filling station, where they were last seen alive. Complicating this theory was the fact that the personal funds in Mr. Whittemore's wallet and Mrs. Whittemore's purse had not been taken. This led to speculation that the robbery may have been a diversion to obscure the real reason for the killings. Despite the efforts of the Vermont State Police over many years, no individuals have ever been arrested or officially named as suspects in the case.
