Leonard Torres and his brother Eduardo Torres were both charged with capital murder for the crime. Eduardo later confessed that the incident began as an attempted robbery, as his brother was seeking money. Eduardo admitted that Leonard used a .380 caliber handgun to rob Valdez, who had just left a convenience store carrying a cell phone and $50. Both brothers were arrested, and investigators discovered the firearm used in the incident along with alterations made to the suspect vehicle after the shooting. The case involved accusations and blame-shifting between the brothers during the investigation.
