On June 24, 2016, 20-year-old Zealand Swisher was shot and killed during a fake drug deal in San Antonio, Texas. The incident occurred on TPC Parkway when six individuals orchestrated a plan to rob the occupants of an apartment by staging a drug transaction. During the robbery, two of the male suspects opened fire, leading to Swisher’s death. The suspects fled the scene in two getaway vehicles, but they were eventually apprehended by law enforcement in the weeks following the incident.
Four men and two women were charged and sentenced for their involvement in the murder. The suspects, aged between 19 and 25, received sentences ranging from 12 to 45 years in prison. Notably, Jai Lynn Arnold was sentenced to 45 years for his role in firing at Swisher, while Ethan Yoast received a 32-year sentence. The other accomplices faced various charges related to the robbery and were also sentenced accordingly. The case brought significant attention to the risks of drug-related violence in the area during a year that saw an overall increase in homicides across San Antonio, highlighting the city's struggle with a surge in violent crime during 2016.
