Deandre Allison was a 20-year-old Black male from Pittsburgh’s South Side whose life ended late on Sunday, September 6, 2015, in Pittsburgh’s Upper Hill District. Around 10 p.m., a Pittsburgh police officer was already in the area, out of his vehicle and speaking with a nearby resident, when the sound of multiple gunshots broke through the night.
The officer moved toward where the shots had come from and found Allison lying in the street on McNeil Place, near Webster Avenue.
Allison had been shot at least once. Later reporting from the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office said he died from a single gunshot wound to the shoulder and chest. The officer began CPR and tried to keep him alive until paramedics arrived, but the effort was not enough. Paramedics pronounced him dead at 10:08 p.m., turning the street corner where he was found into the scene of another Pittsburgh homicide.
In the immediate aftermath, people from the neighborhood gathered nearby, some watching quietly and others consoling grieving family members. Residents described the fear and sadness that followed the shooting, with some saying no one wanted to speak publicly because they were afraid. One neighbor reflected on how young the victim was and how senseless it felt to see someone’s life end before he had a chance to truly live it.
