In the summer of 2016, a young Philadelphia man named Jamil Odom, who was 22 years old, lost his life in a violent series of events. His death, which occurred on June 25, 2016, was the culmination of a troubled romance involving jealousy and violence. The events unfolded at an unoccupied home on 222 East Price Street, a place frequented by Odom, his killer, and a teenage girl.
The individual responsible for Odom's death was Kyle Klein.
At the time, Klein was involved in romantic relationships with both Odom and a 16-year-old girl named Steffanie Hart. Klein was serving a sentence of house arrest at his parents' home across the street from the vacant house where the crimes took place. The three individuals often used the empty house as a place to gather. On the day of the murder, Klein had decided to flee from his house arrest with Hart.
The situation escalated to a fatal confrontation, leading to Odom's death. Following the killing, Klein engaged in further criminal acts in an attempt to cover up his crime. These actions included setting fire to the occupied building where the events had transpired and abusing the victim's corpse.
Kyle Klein was later arrested and faced legal proceedings for his actions. In a consolidated non-jury trial, he was found guilty of voluntary manslaughter, arson of an occupied building or structure, abuse of a corpse, criminal conspiracy, tampering with physical evidence, and obstructing the administration of law. For these crimes, he was sentenced to an aggregate term of fifteen to thirty years of incarceration. An appeal of his judgment of sentence was later affirmed, upholding the court's decision.
